Terrorism Is Very Real For Mnes Essay - 1233 Words

Sadly, terrorism permeates everyday society, and the intensifying impact of terrorism on international business is a global phenomenon with implications for both theory and practice. The research question addressed by this exploratory study is how international businesses apply past terrorism exposure and experience from operating in risky locations to create organizational preparedness and performance resilience to absorb and endure future terrorist attacks. This paper contributes to the international business literature by addressing a gap in the literature how firms can prepare for and respond to terrorism. The study contributes to a theory of organizational resilience by identifying antecedents and associated interactions. The paper contributes to practice by exploring the role of business continuity planning as a bridge between terrorism experience and performance resilience. Introduction: Terrorism and International Business The increasing effect of terrorism on international business is at once a tragedy and a serious challenge to executives and researchers struggling to identify the factors that shape a firm’s ability to deal with both the threat and the reality of terrorism. Terrorism is very real for MNEs. The Birth Of A Baby With Genetic Defects - 1744 Words

Science has evolved rapidly, from paternal test, to vitro fertilization (IVF) and testing embryos for genetic defects; and recently talks of designer babies. The first genetically tested embryo was in the US in 2000 . With his birth, came a law in the UK, (which was where this baby was born) prohibiting the creation of more of these babies. This law was created since the British Medical Association, Dr Vivienne Nathanson, said that these babies would feel as â€Å"medical products†. This law still remains today, but the UK has allowed â€Å"the creation of babies with DNA from two women and one man† (Gallagher), to prevent the birth of a baby with mitochondrial diseases . After the world discovered that the Chinese found a way to edit genes,†¦show more content†¦Why is this? Why is it alright to wish for our child to look a certain way, but when presented with the technology to choice how a child will look like, it is seen as morally wrong? Improvement or enhan cements made for health related issues are seen as acceptable but non health related modifications are not acceptable. To understand what a designer baby is, genetics also has to be understood. Generics is the study of heredity, discovered by Gregor Mendel (also known as the father of genetics) and his pea plants experiment. In Mendel’s experiment â€Å"he described the unit of heredity as a particle that does not change and is passed on to offsprings† (Mandal). This means that a living being gets half of their genes from one parent and the other half from the second parent. These genes are what get modified in designer babies. The term designer babies is the media’s name for eugenics. Eugenicists believe that it is in our society’s best interest to encourage families with â€Å"good genes† to reproduce, and to condemn the â€Å"unfit† families. These genetically modified children are considered as the â€Å"new eugenics†; â€Å"today’s version is ‘positive’: it allows for the creation of more desirable babies† (Tuhus-Dubrow, 40), also the original version deprived people of their rights and liberties. The process used to modify genes is called CRISPR/Cas9. It was discovered in china in 2013; before CRISPR, scientist would

The mind set of Americans during the decade prior to the Spanish American war, the influence of the Americans during the war. Expansionism and imperialism and the causes of the war and what did the Americans gain and lose. The Americans had a long history of imperialism from the expulsion of the native Americans, the Mexican American war, the Spanish American war, the control of cuba and the Philippine, the annexation of Hawaii and Samoa and also the occupation of much of latin America between 1890 and 1930. We will write a custom essay sample on History 1302 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Their tendencies were outgrowth of ethnocentrism which was the belief in manifest destiny. Expansionism was the control of another country’s market or political system through the use of trase and diplomacy and imperialism was the control of another country’s market or political system through the use or threat of use of force. The causes of the American Spanish war, united states had little interest in economic cuba and the south had yet to regain its stature. The Cuban rebels began to attack Americans owned properties, McKinley sent the battleship maine to Havana to protect the American interests, the battleship blew up due to coal dust or the magazine too close to the boiler room, Theodore Roosevelt also wanted war, he dispatched dewey to the Philippines with out the knowledge of the secretary of navy or the president of united states. America was in the mood for war to demonstrate its strength, and what better nation to go to war with, manifest destiny, racism and imperialism were also cause to the war. The United States gained almost all of Spain’s colonies, including the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Cuba was granted independence, but the United States imposed various restrictions on the new government, including prohibiting alliances with other countries, and reserved for itself the right of intervention. Cuba remained technically independent but was required to submit its foreign policy to American approval. By gaining these territories it helped America gain some more resources. 3.The conditions and causes of the progressive era, how it affected people, where did the reforms begin and why, who were the three of the most famous national leader. The causes were the deplorable state of america’s cities including the boss system with it’s corruption, graft and the resulting high taxes which fell on the middle class. Uncontrolled monopolies which ran roughshod over small business and the interest of the people. The corrupt relationship between big business and state and federal government’s elected officials. Lack of any control of the negative impacts on the public of the rampant abuse of the public trust by big business. And then the abuse of children and women in the work places. 5. General reasons for the war in Europe and specific causes and the reasons for the U. S entry into the war. The general causes of the great war, imperialism each major European nation had its colonies in Africa and asia and each saw its colonies as a measure of its own national prowess and also colonies meant sources of raw materials and markets for finished goods for each country. Nationalism was such an ingrained part of the culture and different nationalities in Europe that it is had to separate it from what it means to be british, French, german, or Russia. Its also played apivot role for the Serbians who assassinated the arch duke of Austria hungary, played a role second to pride and marital fealty which bought the arch duke to Sarajevo on that fateful day and also bought America into war. Militarism could not separate from a country’s nationalism in 1914, it was the struggle for the military to make sure that their country would not loose territory if attacked that led to the war that could have been prevented, it also helped the deformed Kaiser Wilhelm to compensate for his short stature. Disintegration of the ottoman empire, vacuum caused by the dissolution of the ottoman empire caused the other nations to lust for those territories and it also liberated yearnings of nationhood and ethnic pride and revenge. Secret and entangling alliances were developed in order to maintain an equilibrium while other nations were trying to upset that equilibrium and gain a power advantage over their rivals were a material cause for the war. War was viewed as an extension of diplomacy and relatively risk free way to gain territory and advantage over a rival, the memory of the diplomats was short, it did not take into account the suffering caused by the Napoleonic wars. Continuing rivalry between france and germany following the franco-russian war. The lack of meaningful communication and understanding internally between the military and diplomatic wings of the various European countries. The U.S entry into the war, Wilson called on his fellow citizens in 1914 to remain which was impossible for a nation of immigrants from all of the countries in the war. Economic realities also made imposible the task of dealing with the belligerents on equal terms, the british put a blockade on german and the germans were using the new submarine warfare to challenge british domination on the atlantic. Wilson demanded that german promise not to repeat such outrage and the germans agreed to his demands. He also demanded that german abandon its unlawful tactics and the german government. Law of Business Advertisement and Marketing

Question: Discuss about the Law of Business Advertisement and Marketing. Answer: Introduction: The fact of the case is that Bill is of 15 years of age and Jill is of 22 years of age. Both are brother and sister in relation. Both of them decided to buy a Sydney cbd caf from Dodgy Pty Ltd., the seller. The seller, Dodgy Pty Ltd. in the contract of sale wrongly states that the money which is taken in the business of caf weekly is at a level of $ 10,000 and it has been at a constant position from the past 5 years. It has also been stated in the contract that the caf should make business of approximately $3000 per week. The contract has also a term saying that the seller, for the preceding 5 years will not run any caf business in the Sydney Cbd from July 1, i.e. the day Bill and Jill bought the caf. But after running the business for several months, both of them found that the average amount which is coming into the business per week is at $2,000. This amount is less than the amount stated in the contract. This case is supported by the Contract Act. Any agreement which has an offer and an agreement which has been accepted by both the parties, is said to be a contract (AustralianContractLaw, 2016). To make a valid contract, it is necessary to have a proper consideration. A contract without consideration is not valid. Intention of the parties as well as certainty to get into a legal relation is another essential element for a valid contract. The parties to a valid contract should have the capacity to enter into the contract and perform accordingly (australianContractLaw, 2016). The agreement made between the seller, Dodgy Pty Ltd. and the buyers, Bill and Jill is a void agreement. An agreement that cannot be enforced by law is said to be a void agreement. This kind of agreement does not have any legal effect. In this contract made between the seller and buyer there is no such consideration mentioned, so this contract is not a valid contract (monash, 2016). The buyer cannot perform the terms mentioned in the contract of taking $3000 per week in the business and it is taking $2000 at an average per week. Therefore, this contract is a void one (Hong, 2015). The contract made between the buyers and seller is also voidable agreement as this agreement can be set aside by any party if one of the party is injured and does not want to continue the contract if there is any breach of any terms of the contract. As the term mentioned in the contract is misrepresenting the facts, the buyers may put aside the contract (Wordpress, 2010). If the contract is made for sale, there cannot be any fixed time period mentioned in the contract. If so, the contract becomes contract of lease and not for sale. The term in the contract that is mentioning that the seller will not continue any business in Sydney cbd for the next 5 years does not make it a sale. In sale once the property is sold, the seller will not show any interest in the business. And in lease, the term is fixed for a definite period where the property as well as the rights to the property is transferred for certain consideration and condition (ACCC, 2016). There is no arising if any legal issue both on the part of the seller and on the part of the buyers, as the seller has dishonestly misrepresented the facts in the contract. As there is breach of contract, the contract can be terminated anytime by the buyers. The fact of this case is Hugh is running a pizza business in the name of Homeslice pizza. For delivering the pizzas around Sydney, he uses UberEats. He was running his business successfully in Sydney with a good amount of profit. He stopped using UberEats and asked his son for delivering the pizzas, in order to cut the costs. Next he decided to use out dated ingredients in making of the pizzas to further reduce the cost. He did this just because of earning more profit. Because of this, many of his customers were becoming ill and one customer amongst them had even died. But he always stated and declared in his advertisement that the ingredients which he used in making the pizzas are completely fresh and the cheese used comes straight away from the farm. The key areas of business law that is relevant in these facts: This business which is being done by Hugh is called a sole trade business. The business that is being run and owned by a single or sole person is a sole trade business (Hughes, 2016). In this type of business, there is a single name for the business. No Ltd. Or Pty. Ltd. is used. The employees of the business are employed by the owner. This business can be established in a very cheap method and has very easy process to get the name of the business registered. Profit to the whole is earned by the owner himself. There is no share of the profit as this type of business is not listed in the stock exchange. If there is any loss to the business, the owner himself is liable for that loss occurred to the business. Financing the company is very hard. The owner is the one who put in the capital. Therefore, the way the company should carry on the business depends completely on the owner of the company (Schweizer, 2016). A sole trader business requires sufficient marketing and advertisement. This is because to increase the business, there needs to be demand created amongst the general public (Intuiy, 2016). Marketing requires proper skill to advertise the service provided by any business. Marketing follows the principle of 4 Ps, i.e., Product, Promotion, Price and Place (austrade, 2016). Nature and quality of a certain product, proper promotion of the same, proper and reasonable price of the product and the place of availability of the same determines the marketing of the product. This increases the curiosity of the consumers which increases the demand of the consumers resulting to increasing of the selling of the product. Marketing and advertisement is almost having the same meaning (marketingminds, 2016). Where marketing follows the principle of 4 Ps, advertisement is the message provided to the general public with the help of the media. Where marketing creates only the demand, advertisement creates the goodwill of the company and reduces the cost as it does not include any middlemen. It determines the loyalty of the business and the product towards the consumers (adstandards, 2016). In this case, Hugh is the owner of the business which is registered under the name of the Homeslice pizzas. He is earning a very good profit and his business was flourishing. This is because the pizza which he is providing is fresh and pocket friendly, as well as the consumers were getting it easily. This easy getting process was liked by all. This freshness of the pizzas and the availability of the same had increased the goodwill of the sole trade business and also have raised the confidence level of the consumers (fairtrading, 206). To expand the business and increase his profit level, Hugh decided to cut the cost of UberEats which he was using for pizza delivery around Sydney. Being the owner of the business, Hugh can take any decisions which he thinks will give profit to his business. In order to do the same, he started using stale and out of date ingredients and stale cheese in his pizzas, but he continued his marketing as well as advertisement that the pizzas made in his company are having fresh ingredients and cheese which comes straight away from the farm. This fact of using fresh products was true in the beginning but now by using stale ingredients, he is misleading his customers who as a result are diminishing the reputation and good will of his business. This telling of lies is also hampering the health of his customers due to which they were falling sick and one have even died. This in a way is also making Hugh committing an offence of fraud representation. Therefore, this will lead him to suffer a great loss in his business. Who can take legal action and what remedies could be given by a court? If at any point of time, any customer is not satisfied by the service provided by any trade or business, damages can be claimed by them from the trader or the business owner. It is given in the ACL that if there is any failure on the part of the service provider and also if the goods or service provided is not suitable to the purpose it is supplied, the customers would not have taken the same if it comes to the knowledge of the customers. The customers facing any damage can claim compensation for the damages caused to them. For this, they can write a letter to the business owner at first. In return the business owner may ask them to prove the damage caused to them. If not satisfied by the behavior of the business owners towards the damages, the customers may file a complaint before the Federal Magistrate Court. The court will look into the matter. If the court thinks that the damage has been caused due to the service provided by the business, the court will order the owner to give co mpensation (consumerlaw, 2016). With reference to this case, Hugh is the service provider. He is liable of compensating the customers because his action of using stale ingredients in the pizzas has damaged the health of the customers. The customers were falling sick. The customers who have fallen sick can ask Hugh to compensate the damage caused to them. They may provide a notice to Hugh stating tha damage caused to them. They can even take the help of the court if Hugh is not responding to the notice provided to him by the customers. The customers can file a complaint in the Federal Magistrate Court within a period of three years of the damage caused to them. Federal Magistrate Courts are comparatively faster and cheaper than the Federal Courts and give relief to the complainant without much harassment. The court will give an order to Hugh to compensate the customers if found guilty of damaging the health of the customers and also for misleading them. Reference ACCC, 2016. Three Roads To One Hero Essays (1510 words) - Beowulf, Geats

Three Roads To One Hero Throughout the two epics, Beowulf, and Gilgamesh, and the novel Grendel, we see certain heroic characteristics of the main characters. Although Beowulf, Grendel, and Gilgamesh all come to a heroic end, they differ in way in which they came to that end. In Beowulf we read of a great warrior who cares about nothing but honor and his people. In Gilgamesh, we see a man who comes to a realization of his mortality, and then does all he can to overcome that weakness. Finally, in Grendel, we see a monster that was born in a cruel world, and comes to a cruel ending. Throughout the epic poem of Beowulf, we not only read of the heroism of Beowulf himself, but the guile of the antagonist, Grendel. By the fifth chapter, Beowulf is showing a characteristic that was vital to a Greek hero. He is boasting of his accomplishments. He tells of how he once fought a serpent in the open ocean. This might not seem to heroic, but you must attempt to become an archeological reader to begin fully understanding why this is so heroic. During the fist century of this millenium, one of the many things that scared people, and continues to do so today, is the unknown. Beowulf braved the unknown on not only land, but also where man has never belonged. He braved the unknown in the ocean. Grendel throughout the poem is, however, shown in a different light. He is a monster. He is a descendant of the first murderer, Cain. He kills simply for sport. He relishes in the blood of mankind. He is a monster who knows no bounds. In Grendel however, the point of view of the reader has changed. We now read from the point of view of the monster. We see how he has been born into a world where he understands next to nothing, and does not even have the comfort of a true mother. He can talk to no one, save for a dragon that sees everything, past, present and future, and he is alone in a world of humans. There is no place of refuge where he can escape the world of hate that he lives in. He is something that is unknown to humans, and is therefore unwanted, frightful, and must be either eliminated or banished form view. Although in both of the epics, one an English and the other a Mesopotamian, we read of heroic qualities of one main character, and through that main character the ideals of that culture as a whole, in Grendel, we read of an outcast, who is killed simply because he is an enigma to the people. This is where these three stories break down, in the way, not only in which they become heroes, but the way in which the author accomplishes this feat. In both Beowulf and Gilgamesh, we read of people who are highly esteemed, and emulate everything that those respective cultures hold dear. In Grendel, we see the cynicism of the twentieth century, and we read of all the ways in which our society and culture has become incongruent with that which we say we hold dear. In Gilgamesh, we read of a man who is stronger than all that are in the land, and his adventures to prove that to the world. He is a symbol of everything that his country and culture regards as praiseworthy. Not only, though, is he a physically strong person, but he is also given the gift or blessing of being able to reason. He is a man of not only sound body, but also of a sound mind. In addition to knowing how great and powerful he himself is, Gilgamesh also knows when to stop (sometimes). When he is fighting Enkidu, he discovers that his foe is his equal. Therefore, he does not become over-prideful, and deny that someone could be as great as he himself is, but he makes one of the best decisions that can be made by man. He makes his enemy his friend. The greatest interpretation of these three stories comes not only in seeing how well they are congruent, but also how they begin to differ when

Definition and Examples of Heat Energy

Definition and Examples of Heat Energy Most people use the word heat to describe something that feels warm, however in science, thermodynamic equations, in particular, heat is defined as the flow of energy between two systems by means of kinetic energy. This can take the form of transferring energy from a warm object to a cooler object. More simply put, heat energy, also called thermal energy or simply heat, is transferred from one location to another by particles bouncing into each other. All matter contains heat energy, and the more heat energy that is present, the hotter an item or area will be. Heat vs. Temperature The distinction between heat and  temperature  is  subtle  but very important. Heat refers to the transfer of energy between systems (or bodies), whereas temperature is determined by the energy contained within a singular system (or body). In other words, heat is energy, while temperature is a measure of energy. Adding heat will increase a bodys temperature while removing heat will lower the temperature, thus changes in temperature are the result of the presence of heat, or conversely, the lack of heat. You can measure the temperature of a room by placing a thermometer in the room and measuring the ambient air temperature. You can add heat to a room by turning on a space  heater. As the heat is added to the room, the temperature rises. Particles have more energy at higher temperatures, and as this energy is transferred from one system to another, the fast-moving particles will collide with slower moving particles. As they collide, the faster particle will transfer some of its energy to the slower particle, and the process will continue until all the particles are operating at the same rate. This is called thermal  equilibrium. Units of Heat The SI unit for heat is a form of energy called the joule (J). Heat is frequently also measured in the calorie (cal), which is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water from 14.5 degrees Celsius to 15.5 degrees Celsius. Heat is also sometimes measured in British thermal units or Btu. Sign Conventions for Heat Energy Transfer In physical equations, the amount of heat transferred is usually denoted by the symbol Q. Heat transfer may be indicated by either a positive or negative number. Heat that is released into the surroundings is written as a negative quantity (Q 0). When heat is absorbed from the surroundings, it is written as a positive value (Q 0). Ways of Transferring Heat There are three basic ways to transfer heat: convection, conduction, and radiation. Many homes are heated through the convection process, which  transfers heat energy through gases or liquids. In the home, as the air is heated, the particles gain heat energy allowing them to move faster, warming the cooler particles. Since hot  air is  less dense than cold air, it will rise.  As the cooler air falls, it can be drawn into our heating systems which will again allow the faster particles to heat up the air. This is considered a circular flow of air and is called a  convection current.  These currents  circle  and heat  our homes. The conduction process is the transfer of heat energy from one solid to another, basically, two things that are touching. We can see an example of this can be seen when we cook on the stove. When we place the cool pan down on the hot burner, heat energy is transferred from the burner to the pan, which in turn heats up. Radiation is a process in which heat moves through places where there are no molecules, and is actually a form of electromagnetic energy. Any item whose heat can be felt without direct connection is radiating energy. You can see this in the heat of the sun, the feeling of heat coming off a bonfire thats several feet away, and even in the fact that rooms full of people will naturally being warmer than empty rooms because each persons body is radiating heat.

Goldman Sachs and the Future of the Internet Essay

Goldman Sachs and the Future of the Internet - Essay Example Gus Levy, senior partner of the firm from1969 until 1976, is known for articulating the firm’s investment strategy as being â€Å"long-term greedy;† i.e. willing to absorb short term losses in exchange for the promise of long term profits. The dark side of the company’s dealings has been the fodder of many a polemical writer, however, and not without cause. In 1928 it started the Goldman Sachs Trading Company, which operated much like a Ponzi scheme and collapsed in the crash of 1929. In 1970 it nearly went under when the Penn Central Transportation Company went bankrupt, owing tens of millions of dollars in commercial paper from Goldman Sachs. A crisis erupted which involved numerous lawsuits. In 2007 Two Goldman traders, Michael Swenson and Josh Birnbaum, made a $4 billion profit by short-selling subprime mortgage securities. By 2008 their involvement in the financial products contributed to the global meltdown that occurred that year. A source of long-term con troversy has been the ease with which Sachs employees transition into government roles. American president George H.W. Bush made former Goldman CEO Henry Paulson his Secretary of the Treasury. Current Secretary Timothy Geitner’s chief of staff is former Goldman lobbyist Mark Patterson. The current CEO of the company has visited the White House at least ten times since Barak Obama became president. It is reported that the firm was a major contributor to Obama’s 2008 campaign. (A Brief) This dichotomous image of being at once financial geniuses and underhanded opportunists is buttressed by Goldman’s activities since the early days of public Internet use. The company handled the IPO of Microsoft,... This essay stresses that Goldman profits regardless of how the company they promote fares over time. However, there are two possible disadvantages in this scenario. Goldman may not sell its holdings in the company before the bubble bursts. It will then lose the profits earned from the stock’s price going up. Additionally, investors may be reluctant to invest money in firms promoted by Goldman if their reputation suffers over the long term. This paper makes a conclusion that it is worthwhile for Goldman to invest in Internet firms such as Facebook is dependent on which scenario best benefits its overall profitability. Given that the last dot-com bubble is still remembered, a cautious strategy would be for the firm to exercise due diligence practices before promoting such companies. Unlike the 1990s, there now exist mature, stable web-based companies that show strong prospects for solid, continued growth into the future. The aforementioned Facebook is one example. This paper has only considered the question from a monetary viewpoint. There are also ethical considerations, however. Deliberately creating bubbles may benefit the firm doing so, but it virtually guarantees an economic contraction and ruined portfolios in the longer term. That same outcome can also be seen as undesirable purely from a selfish viewpoint. The world economy is currently in a very fragile state, largely due to the real estate bubble aftermath.
